When this product first hit stores it was one of the first high capacity mp3 players that supported video. The battery life with video wasn't great but it took the world by storm. It was called the iPod, with video. The second generation released to similar world record sales and supported longer battery life so in addition to those episodes of LOST and your music videos, full length movies could be watched and leave battery life left over. This one was called by fans the ipod video. Its predecessor came in 30 and 60 gig versions with actually harddisks onboard. The new versions came with actuall harddisks but the 60 gig was replaced with the 80 gig. The new version generation three, dubbed the 'iPod CLASSIC' no longer uses the fragile harddisks but high speed flash memory which means your videos and movies will load faster and the device itself is significantly thinner that its predecessors. The gigabyte offerings have changed as well with the 30 discontinued and replaced by a sexy super thin 80 gig and this vacant high capacity spot filled by the still thinner than the brick like ZUNE 160 gig.
